How do modern Muslims see the rest of the world?

I don't have any understanding of the views of Muslims outside of vague stereotypes that they are intolerant of outsiders. I know there are uneducated and isolated people of every religion who have very hard-set and extreme views, so I ask this specifically about modern, metropolitan Muslims (i.e. ones with education who live in and around cities). How do they look at the world? Does their religion factor into their world view? For example, some western cities are very diverse and people of non-majority religions are not widely regarded as inferior or misguided, but as interesting and the diversity is welcomed. Is the same true say, in Bangladesh or Indonesia or Kuwait?
