How did rodents survive 550ft under ground for a decade?

When the asteroid hit the earth, it sent the earth into a broiling atmosphere, dropping to 5 degree celsius. When that happened, a layer of ash was in the ozone layer and killed off the bigger species. The rodents survived by burying themselves 200 meters under ground.
